Cloning

In January 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that meat and milk from cloned livestock and their offspring are safe for human consumption. This FDA rule raises questions about food safety risks, animal cruelty and other ethical concerns.

The FDA is not requiring labeling, so consumers have no way to avoid cloned foods.

There are few studies — and no long-term food safety studies — on the risks of food from clones and their offspring. Opinion polls show that the majority of Americans do not want food from animal clones and oppose cloning on ethical grounds. Twenty major companies have pledged not to use meat or milk from cloned animals.

PCC and the Center for Food Safety (PDF Fact Sheet) are calling on the FDA to ban the use of clones in food production and has issued a report, Not Ready for Prime Time: FDA’s Flawed Approach To Assessing The Safety Of Food From Animal Clones (PDF).
