Product recall: Sprouts
September 5, 2008
PCC Natural Markets has removed from sale three sprout varieties due to an outbreak of Salmonella associated with them: Alfalfa, Salad and Onion Sprouts. These sprouts are sold under the Sprouters Northwest, Inc. label.
All other varieties of sprouts (Bean, Broccoli, Green Peas, Cow Peas, Red Lentils, Garbanzo Beans, Clover and Radish) are not included in this recall.
People infected with Salmonella usually develop fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea 12 to 72 hours after infection. Illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
PCC is advising shoppers to not consume Alfalfa, Salad and Onion Sprouts purchased from PCC and to return them for a full refund.
